The Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan occurred in December 1979 when the Soviet troops rolled over the Afghan border, the southern border of the then Soviet Union. They proceeded to the King’s palace occupied by the first Afghan President Sardar Mohammed Daoud Khan killing him and his entire family and staff. The Soviets then took over the only media of the time, Radio Afghanistan Kabul and announced that the country had been overtaken by Americans and Chinese and the Soviets were there to liberate the Afghans.
